Breton: best of South London

Here is another great album which is going rather unnoticed by the crowds I’m afraid. It’s an amazing mash of symphonic and atmospheric noise/electro, at times laid over hip-hop beats in a dark and edgy hue. I couldn’t play enough of their remix to Chapel Club’s All the Eastern Girls during my dj sets last year. Now I am absolutely loving these gloomy and political South Londoners’ debut album, Other People’s Problems. The opener “Pacemaker” leaves you dumb-founded from the very first minute, whereas the closing moments are just as strong with “The Commission.” I could not disagree more with the 4.9 they received from Pitchfork and interpret the “sonically muddled” criticism rather as “sonically progressive.” (Then again, Pitchfork gave a 4 to Given to the Wild right?!) They are trying to make a statement without screaming at our faces and they have a lot of ideas that are beautifully, if sometimes roughly integrated into their music. It’s true that they sound a bit too multi-layered at times, especially on the more uptempo numbers. However, this sonic chaos is intentional, as if to create a members-only party with those who’d get it. It’s part of their charm, wit and appeal. No average commercial pop, no easy listening here.

They are playing at Scala on the 24th (a rare opportunity to see them live which I would have missed if it wasn’t for a random look at Scala’s program, since the group failed to put it on their myspace) and I will be reporting. Although I highly suspect that their aspirations are to get bigger and more popular, expect to hear much more from the five-piece with their unique musical, lyrical and visual intellect nevertheless.
