Applescal – Japanese Bubbles

Applescal, aka Pascal Terstappen, had said that his new album would steer more towards electronica than his earlier ambient techno. I have just had the chance to listen to his new tracks streaming on his SC page ahead of their May 18 release. As lovely as they are, there is not a trace of the passion and sense of urgency there was in his previous output like Wise Noise and El Diablo. They are chill, sweet but not very memorable (The fittingly titled Japanese Bubbles do last in your mind as long as bubbles). I hope he doesn’t go down the later Max Cooper, Gidge, Cold Courage route that an increasing number of producers have started going because nobody does what he does quite as good as him. Just a thought.
