I first heard of Rival Consoles when he was to play with Douglas Dare on Erased Tapes label showcase on last Record Store Day. I remember checking out his music and being instantly blown away a few seconds into one of the best tracks of last year, Recovery. It was incredible production with a soaring sense of urgency that slapped you in the face. Now he is back with a new LP titled Howl and boy, what a record it is! Opener Howl feels like a tribute to another electronic music institution that is Jon Hopkins and subtler tracks like Low amp up the melancholia. It is packed with everything that made you like him in the first place, tracks like Wall taking up on where Recovery left off and adding more to the mix. It is one of the best efforts of 2015. Don’t pass on it!
